This striking Sumida Gawa pottery pitcher features a bold and dynamic relief of elephants rendered in high relief against a dark, rippled background. The sculptural figures, full of texture and motion, showcase the distinctive three-dimensional style that defines classic Sumida ware. Rich glaze transitions—from deep charcoal and earthy browns to flowing blue at the rim—add dramatic contrast and depth, enhancing the tactile, almost sculptural quality of the piece.

Dating from the late Meiji to early Taishō period, this work exemplifies the inventive spirit of Sumida Gawa artisans, who combined traditional Japanese pottery techniques with expressive, often whimsical motifs. The elephants, symbols of strength and wisdom, appear to stride across the vessel’s surface, bringing life and movement to this remarkable example of hand-modeled Japanese art pottery.
