Papua New Guinea Large Yam Woven Mask
Originating from the Abelam people region of the East Sepik Province of Papua New Guinea. The large circular woven halo and elongated central facial section are signature features of Abelam woven yam masks (baba tagwa). The open latticework is both aesthetic and symbolic, representing lightness and the permeable boundary between the human and spirit realms. Among the Abelam, these masks are closely linked to yam cult ceremonies. The Abelam people grow yams not just as food but as sacred beings — the largest yams are seen as embodiments of ancestor spirits
