Josh Peters Framed Landscape Painting on Canvas "From the Garden at Mendocino"
This acrylic on absorbent material on canvas was painted by Josh Peters before the devastating Pasadena and Altadena fires reshaped the landscape around his home.
What’s shown here — a lush, layered view of the San Gabriel Mountains — no longer exists in this form. Peters painted it while exploring the natural spaces near his neighborhood, sometimes working from photographs, other times directly from life, in the plein air tradition that’s central to his practice.
The painting feels alive with motion — loose strokes of green and brown sweeping across the surface, the trees and hills almost blurring into one another as if already fading from view. It carries an unintentional sense of preservation, a quiet documentation of something now gone. In this work, Peters captures not only a place, but also a moment before loss — a reminder of how fragile and temporary even the most familiar landscapes can be.
